THE MET office says Nottingham is now heading for freezing temperatures.
A cold weather alert at Level three has been put in place for the East Midlands - one step below a national emergency.
The alert is on hold until Friday and warns that "strengthening winds will exacerbate the cold feel" throughout this week.
Temperatures are predicted to gradually drop over the next few days, until they reach a low of -5C on Thursday morning.
The Met Office has warned that it will feel like -6C for most of the day, however.
Friday will warm slightly, with temperatures climbing to highs of -1C - but snow is forecast to be on the way again by Friday lunchtime.
A yellow severe weather warning - the lowest level of the three from the Met Office - has been issued for most of Friday due to the threat posed by the snow.
Light snow will continue throughout most of Saturday, but temperatures will not get above -1C for the whole day.
